Top 10 things you can put on chips
What is your favourite topping?
I like to consider myself a sort of 'chip connoisseur', as there isn't many other foods which are as good as this. I have tried all sorts of toppings and sauces with french fries in the past so now feel it is time to share some of the best with you. To prove this to you, this is me last year enjoying a rather sizable portion of chips in Amsterdam.
Anyway, here are my top 10 things to put on chips:
Having lived in Yorkshire for the last 10 years, I would have to rank this pretty high up. There isn't much better than having a large portion of chips with a proper beef gravy. However, there is a way to top this.
Chips with Gravy and Cheese (Poutine)
I was in a pub the first time I came across Poutine and I was hooked ever since. This style of eating chips originated in Quebec back in the 50s. I have also seen some other versions which involve bacon, cheeseburger and other delicious looking things.
Now this is what you want. These are the best too. You can find these at Shake Shack and they are literally to die for. This along with a burger and a milkshake is my idea of heaven. Another way to enjoy this is to throw in a bit of bacon.
Chips and Curry Sauce
I think this might be another northern influence but you can't hate it until you've tried it. My go top order at the fish and chip shop would be a standard fish and chips but with curry sauce on top. There is just something so delicious about this.
Chips and Mayo
This another strong contender. In my eyes, mayo is far better than ketchup and always will be. If you are worried about calories then try using Hellmann's lighter than light mayo. It tastes the same but with a fraction of the calories.
Chips and Ketchup
For many people, chips and ketchup is all you will ever need in life. It is never something I have been too in to, especially since mayo is around but they go well together nonetheless.
Peri Peri Salt
Now, if you don't live in the UK or have never heard of Nandos, then you my friend, are missing out. It is like salt but with a nicer flavour and sometimes a little spicy. Most places in the UK do it now but I think the trend was set by Nandos.
Chips and Mushy Peas
Another thing you would order with your fish and chips would be mushy peas. Not only are these great with chips but also with gravy or curry sauce. A real winner.
Salt and Vinegar Chips
This might sound pretty boring but then again, so does chips and salt, yet that is tasty. Vinegar with your chips gives it a nice edge on other foods for sure. But not too much otherwise your face will shrivel up.
I had to end with this one as it's just the ultimate blend of meat, cheese and chips. Chilli Con Carne with cheese, chips, sour cream and parsley is to die for. Trust me. If you ever see this on a restaurant menu you have to go for it.
