UK goes wild as Greggs launches vegan steak bake
We need something to look forward to in 2020...
It’s the start of a new year, and the start of a brand new decade. Maybe you’re one of those people who goes in for the whole, ‘new year, new me’ thing. Well, if part of that is starting out with Veganuary, like 100,000 other people around the world, Greggs is on hand to make the transition a little easier.
After the Greggs vegan sausage roll took the world (ok, the UK) by storm last year, the company has now rolled out its vegan steak bake.
It’s pretty similar to the original actual steak bake, with 96 thin layers of puff pastry – minus the egg glaze, of course. The filling is made of Quorn mince, mixed with diced onions and meat-free gravy.
It goes on sale in 1,300 Greggs stores from Thursday 2 January, before (sausage) rolling out to the other 700 shops on 16 January. And it will cost £1.55.
Greggs’ chief executive, Roger Whiteside, said, “Our vegan sausage roll launch was a huge success and we’ve been working tirelessly to expand our vegan-friendly offering and provide more delicious savoury food on-the-go options for people looking to reduce their meat intake.”
Greggs serves around 6m people a week across its 2,000 stores. When the vegan sausage roll launched last year, it became one of the company’s top 10 best-selling products, increasing sales by 13.4%.
Will Piers Morgan have another near literal meltdown on Twitter and TV over the Greggs vegan steak bake? We can only hope.
Oh look, he’s started already…
