Watch: Can Lucy Brown cook an entire Christmas dinner for The Smallest Cog team?

Did we mention she's only got a Tefal ActiFry Genius XL 2in1 to use?

In many ways, The Smallest Cog is a truly cutting-edge workshop, full of the latest car restoration technology. But in the food department, things don't normally get much better than a petrol station sandwich with a can of Fanta. Lucy Brown – armed with a Tefal ActiFry and nothing but a Tefal ActiFry – has decided to change that, making the Greenhouses a full Christmas dinner: turkey, stuffing, roasties, sprouts, the lot!

The chaps deserve it, after all. We also wanted to make it as easy as possible for Lucy. Spoiler alert: She does admit in the video that she's NEVER PEELED A POTATO BEFORE. The bods at Tefal have stepped in to help by inventing the Tefal ActiFry Genius XL 2in1 air fryer, which is the only cooking appliance you need to pull off this behemoth of a challenge (with 99% less added fat*). If you don't believe us, we have a video to prove it can be done.

The Tefal ActiFry will take care of all the tricky timings, no juggling pots and pans this year. You really will be able to pour yourself a sherry and peacefully (although, unlikely) watch the Queen's Speech, or just neck a craft beer, whatever's your thing.

Not only that, but because the Tefal ActiFry has a paddle which stirs your food for you as well as two separate cooking zones, you can make multiple parts of a recipe in one without needing to lift a finger. The lack of washing up involved here is a huge perk, as is the absence of bickering over who's in too deep a food coma to do it.

It is super-healthy in the way it cooks food, which comes down to the fact you use a lot less oil cooking with an ActiFry than with a conventional oven. Your food will hit your plate grease-free. And bonus point, the machine looks like a mini spaceship (enough already, we're sold).

We're not only going to show you how we successfully cook a Christmas dinner in an ActiFry, but also the recipes for each component, Brussels sprouts and all.

Hands down the roast potatoes are the most important part of this festive feast and for that reason it feels like a good recipe to kick things off, then we will run through each recipe for the whole main course.

And we know what you are thinking — how will you fit a turkey in that thing! As Lucy Brown points out in her marvellous video, we have no intention of cramming a Flintstone size joint in the ActiFry. No way! Watch and learn, friends, watch and learn. And remember there's minimal washing up, did we mention that?

Roasted Brussels Sprouts with balsamic

Our green friends turned charred, crispy and tender

Serves4
Mealside dish

Ingredients

  • 1 pound (454 g) brussels sprouts , ends removed and cut into bite sized pieces
  • 2 Tablespoons (15 ml) olive oil , or more if needed
  • 1 Tablespoon (15 ml) balsamic vinegar
  • Salt
  • Black pepper

Instructions

  1. Put cut brussels sprouts to bowl. Drizzle oil and balsamic vinegar evenly over the brussels sprouts. Don’t dump the oil and vinegar in one spot or else it will just coat one brussels sprout. You want to make sure to coat all the brussels sprouts.
  2. Sprinkle salt and pepper evenly over the brussels sprouts. Stir to combine everything and long enough so that all the brussels sprouts soaks up the marinade. There shouldn’t be any marinade left in the bottom of the bowl.
  3. Add brussels to the air fryer basket. Air fry at 360°F for about 15-20 minutes. Shake and gently stir half way through, about 8 minutes into cooking. Make sure you shake at the halfway mark! You don’t wany to end up with uneven cooking. If needed, shake and toss a 3rd time to make sure it all cooks evenly.
  4. Continue to air fry the brussels for the remainder of the time, or until the brussels are golden brown and cooked through. You can check earlier if needed to make sure nothing burns. Or you can add more time if needed to make sure it’s cooked through.
  5. Add additional salt and pepper if needed on the brussels sprouts and enjoy!

  • I actually thought this was a very warming video, I think the gadget worked for the environment.

I’m sure the crew enjoyed someone making an effort for them.

  • Honestly, I've watched the video and thought that it all looked somehow dried-out and burned. How come this is "the thing" right now?

Lucy made an effort and everybody was looking forward to it, but all that dried-out stuff.... If she'd really cooked it, it would have been way better, I think.

I am sad it turned out the way it did.

Would never buy such a gadget.

  • I have an air fryer lid for my Instant Pot, and it's bloody great. I did some excellent roast spuds the other day: parboiled, roughed, salt, good drizzle of oil (intending to try lard or goose fat next), and then 20 minutes on the Roast setting. They turned out fluffy and crispy, and definitely worth while.
