Watch: Rachael Hogg and James May get in a right pickle... about pickle
One will only ever Bring out the Branston... the other loves any type of pickle or chutney going... I'm sure you know where this is going by now
James May really loves Branston pickle. So much so, he won't consider any other type of chutney or pickle ever hitting the spot for him, quite the way Branston does.
Don't get me wrong, I love Branston pickle as well. It's an absolute must on a jacket potato with beans and cheese.
But I also like to expand my chutney culinary horizons, and I love making chutneys and pickles at home.
I'll be the first to admit I don't think I'll be taking on Branston in the business stakes any time soon, but I've got a few recipes up my sleeve that friends still talk about years later... in a good way (honest).
No doubt I'll once again lose this battle with the general public. I'm starting to think James could say he loves eating roadkill vs me saying I love a good steak, and he'd still win... Not that I'm bitter or anything. If you need me, I'll be drowning my sorrows in a strong cup of coffee with a ketchup chaser.

Noooooooo In the video you explained how to make a ‘ Refrigerator Pickle’. They last a week or two. For a pickle to be thoroughly addressed like his favorites: put cucumber slices or lengths in quart size mason jar, cover with mixture of vinegar and whatever flavor you want.....garlic or dill...this gets divided over each jar. If you know how to ‘can’ put the jars in to boil and process. (Have someone who know how explain when you tighten lids and for how long. Once they are processed through the boiler the ‘canned’ pickle needs to sit for the flavor to develop. This is the way they can be ‘put up’ for a year or two or more. They will be sealed as if they came from a store. Definitely get someone who knows how to do the processing it has just a few steps but have to do them exactly. My grandmother could put up the pickles, green beans ( plain or jpickled ), peppers and corn in a day. I got to be the picker from the garden and the stuffer putting them in the jars. The best days were when we canned jams mmm mmhhh
Caramelised red onion chutney on sharp cheddar or Stilton. Had so much in the run up to Christmas last year. Usually at 2/3 in the morning when I couldnt sleep!
We don't have that product in Sweden. Well, we can order it but not on the shelfs.
Forgive my ignorance but as an American I have never heard of Branson pickles... are they Dill, Kosher Dill, Sweet, Bread and Butter .... those are pretty much the only types I know so this video simply confused me ... someone should blow James's mind and give him a koolicle
In America, we call Branston Pickle a relish. You can find it in most larger "supercenter" grocers, i.e. Walmart, Kroger, etc. Unless you lived in Branson, Missouri. Then you would call it "whut the hell is that stuff?"
I never tried Branston because it's not available in the "normal" supermarkets in my country, only in the "specialty corners" of the more expensive ones, but I'm willing to try and compare to homemade pickle. Alas, making pickle isn't really a tradition here so I guess I'll have to wait for my opportunity 😊
