We designed our own fridges using Liebherr's MyStyle configurator

James May liked one of them so much, he's getting it made for real. Can you guess which one?

When it comes to buying a car – or fantasising about buying a car – many of us spend (a lot of) time using a configurator, playing about with how we want our cars to look, what colour they would be, accessories they should come with, how they should be specced. But did you know you can also configure... your fridge? Pick the size, colour, shape, technology, shelving, and importantly, have total free rein on the design.

Liebherr has recently launched its MyStyle configurator. Whether in colour, individually printed or with internal features tailored to your needs, with MyStyle you can create your refrigerator your way. Select your desired appliance from three appliance categories and start designing your appliance.

A few of us at team FoodTribe/DriveTribe decided to have a play with the configurator, and showed James May what we'd come up with. He liked one of the designs so much, he's getting it made for the bunker kitchen. Can you guess which one?

If you'd like to design your own fridge, head to the Liebherr MyStyle configurator. We'd love to see your designs in the comments. And while you're at it, let us know what you think of our designs in the comments below.

At least with this design, everyone will know what my fridge holds. Ok, so I probably couldn't use this as my main fridge, mostly because I filled it with bottle shelves and nothing else... and the freezer is solely for ice. But as the fridge for my hypothetical summer house/bar that I don't actually have but always dream of, could a fridge be any more perfect?! Handy hints on the door show that if you open it, you'll be greeted with bottles of Champagne, shelves stacked with wine, and cocktail ingredients ready to go. Then I added patterns. So. Many. Patterns. I didn't go too overboard though. The sides are plain blue. Give me some credit.

I'll be honest, I've spent more time on this fridge configurator than I did on Maserati's configurator during a touch-typing exam many years ago. The options are so great and the idea of being artistic with an appliance is enthralling. My first design was a pink throwback to the 1950s days when white goods mercifully weren't white... and half an hour later I might have been giving a fridge door a paisley effect.

However, since I don't actually have a kitchen of my own, what I've settled on is this compact little fridge, finished innocuously in First Aid livery.

It'd be full of beers though, not Pfizer jabs.

I wanted to design the perfect fridge for James May to have in his bunker kitchen, which meant it had to be a bit silly. I thought it would be funny for him to have to look at himself, so I put the May cheese meme on the front. It made sense seeing as he'll always have a large supply of itchy cheddar in there. To finish it off, I added some of James bunker catchphrases on the side – he found that amusing too.

I am forever up and down to the fridge, a scenario which is exacerbated by the current work from home sitch that a lot of us have found ourselves in. As a result, I spend a large portion of my time feeling either one of two things:

1: Disappointed with my prior grocery shopping choices and lack of foresight

2: Uninspired as to what to cook with only a few mediocre ingredients at my disposal

The solution? Stick a few vague drawings of food on a fridge that will trigger inspiration and activate any dormant grocery shopping skills that may be occupying my subconscious. Aubergine? Sure! Giant not-to-scale strawberry? Yum! Undisclosed flavoured ice cream? Yes please! This fridge will not only make you the king of your kitchen, but also your shopping basket!

This is MY personal fridge. Sharing my house with a husband and two greedy children, I often find that the chocolate goes missing, especially when I really fancy a slab with a glass of vino. The house is quiet and I can have some peace, then I realise the goody cupboard has been raided earlier in the day! I'm sick of it. MY fridge will be kept in my bedroom stocked with goodies just for me, hence why I picked the smallest one. And it’s pink, to match my new pink bed. And I like pink. Can I please have a lock too?!

I centred my fridge design around one element. Fizzy. Larger. Bois.

It's orange because the colour is commonly associated with feelings of joy, warmth, and happiness – all feelings I go through when I crack one open with my friends. (Orange is also just quite simply, my favourite colour, and it happens to be the colour of FoodTribe. Bonus).

A fridge of this magnificence deserves to hold one thing, and one thing only... tinnies and bottles. While I hold no personal grudges against vegans or vegetarians, vegetables are not welcome in my fridge. It serves to supply myself and my pals with joy, warmth and happiness; all of which have been in short supply as of the last 18 months. I can't wait to show off my fantastic graphical design skills, but also my big overly orange fridge to all of my dearly missed friends this summer!

I haven't quite decided where I'm going to put this fridge in my house, which is why I've included the all-important left and right design elements. On the left-hand side of the fridge, I've stuck with the stunning orange finish, with directions that will lead me straight to the handle. On the right, I've kept it fairly minimalistic with a bunch of my favourite beers nicely labelled at a quirky angle.

After discovering the options I could choose to design my fridge, I found my Google search littered with things like, “good looking fridges’’ and, “is it wrong to be attracted to a fridge?” I should say now that no, I am not at risk of starting a relationship with any of my kitchen appliances. However, my research did uncover that a fridge is a fab way to tie a kitchen together and the opportunity to really personalise it should not go amiss.

As a young adult coming into the summer months of her 21st year, I had to think about what I would want my fridge to be stocked with? Really cold lemonade, chilled rosé and satisfying rows of bottles sprung to mind. Not wanting to go overboard volume wise, I have chosen The Compact One as the size and filled the interior with bottle racks and a few shelves to house my lovely beverages.

From the rainbow of colours I could choose from I wanted to keep it clean and classy (very debatable) so I chose the brushed black. As for having the famous trio on the front, I feel they will provide me with guidance as the evening progresses. Once I feel my expression to be not dissimilar from Mr Clarkson’s here, I would think it best to close the fridge for the night.

Turns out I want a fridge that tells horrific dad jokes. I'm not going to lie and say I didn't find myself hilarious typing it out... but that doesn't mean I'm not experiencing massive amounts of self-hate at the same time. So aside from the terrible jokes, I've gone for an 'energy saver' fridge in a vibrant fern green colour which I thought would be a great addition to my family home's kitchen, contrasting well with its surrounding pastel coloured surfaces.

For the interior I've gone for a number of transparent glass top shelves accompanied by the essential bottle shelf as well. I'm not a massive believer in eggs and butter in the fridge, so I decided to side step those options.

Either way, it doesn't look like Liebherr will be hiring me any time soon for my design skills, but I am happy with my own creation!
