What is Natto and how do you eat it?
Small stinky beans with lots of nutrients
Natto are fermented soybeans often eaten for breakfast. It is usually served with rice. As a fermented food, natto can have a strong stinky smell. I personally don't usually notice it but others in the house are more sensitive to it and think it's gross.
Each package of natto comes usually comes with mustard and soy sauce. (some brands in Japan come with other condiments such as wasabi instead of mustard). As you mix in the condiments, the natto becomes sticky and slimy.
Due to the strong smell and texture, natto can be an acquired taste. People that eat natto, usually eat it for nutritional reasons as they are low in calories but high in protein and fibre.
Natto can be eaten alone or on top or rice and it is usually served with breakfast. The beans themselves, less the condiments, can also be used as a topping/filling in other dishes such as noodles and okonomiyaki.
Have you ever heard of natto before? If so, have you ever tried it?
