I find a diagonal cut to be more aesthetically pleasing. And I always, always cut any sandwiches made using round buns, such as burgers, on the diagonal; cutting them any other way would be just wrong.
But you can obliterate 70% of the crust faster if you eat both pointy ends first...then you're left with glorious middle sandwich and a tiny corner of crust. 😍 I say this but I secretly love cutting mine horizontally, but twice so I have 4...
I ask myself this everytime I make a sandwich but to me, it really all depends on what kind of sandwich it is. Will you be dipping it? Then diagonal for sure. No dipping? Still depends on what kind of sandwich. But that's just me.
