What is the most popular and best French meal?

There is just one question to answer now. You might choose one or two options.

The French gastronomy is plenty of meals with hundreds of variable specialities. If you have not yet tasted the French cooking, you have certainly heard about some cooking methods or technical phrases.

The gratin dauphinois (without cheese or with cheese) and the famous parsley snails are obviously known all over the world. However, some meals such as the choucroute or the cassoulet don't seem to have the same luck outside France or Europe.

You might give more propositions in the comments in addition of those in the poll.

Bonus : I'll try to cook the most popular meal among your suggestions giving you a simple recipe in a next article.

  • It's not the most popular, but I did aim to vote Escargot - and ended up getting the wrong button. But Escargot.

    • The snails/escargots are perfectly good with parsley. Seriously, I can understand it is not common to have this meal for Christmas or the New Eve.

  • Voted for coq au vin but would also add gratin dauphinois to the list. Made it myself the day before yesterday and it turned out excellent 😋

  • I've had a croque-madame

    • The difference between the croque-madame and the croque-monsieur is the egg on top of the first one if I'm right. I'm not used to eat them very often.

    • Yes. I want one just thinking about it.

  • Not sure if I chose the right one, pot au feu. I stayed in Lannion for three weeks and ate a great deal in restaurants, French and Vietnamese, but our instructor took us home one day. He lived in a small detached house that felt like the countryside and I remember the meal was so different to any French food I had ever tasted before. None of this nouvelle cuisine, instead something extremely tasty and filling. I thought I remembered it being pork though and not beef.

    • The Pot au feu is a traditional stew in which you add beef. You can choose other kinds of meats like lamb or pork if you prefer. The recipe is simple : vegetables cooked with meat in water in a pot. So, there are many ways to prepare your meal.
