What toppings make the best hot dog?

There has recently been much debate about the ultimate hot dog fillings.

Hot dogs are the undisputed royalty of summer; burgers are yesterday’s news. Not even Meghan Markle could argue with their astounding authority.

Although slipping a usually burned sausage into the breaches of a bun seems a perfectly harmless and straightforward task, there is not always quite the same harmony when it comes to the fillings. After all, onions and ketchup are fairly standard, but what about people who want to push the boat out (or generally trigger others into an incessant rage)?

Twitter user Mikey Hutch probably didn’t know what he was letting himself in for when he posed the overwhelmingly controversial question that asked for people’s favourite hot dog toppings.

Despite a generally appealing start, things inevitably careered dangerously into the bizarre.

Finally came the downright rude (I’d rather read the posts of Russian bots).

How do you smother your hot dogs?

  • Mustard is essential, cheese is important, but now I've realised I should have tried jalapenos and scrambled egg.

    • It sounds terrible but I'm actually down for the scrambled egg...

    • Imagine this: hot dog bun, bit of grated cheese, kransky and scrambled egg with cheese and maybe a bit of chorizo. Plus a jalapeno. Does that not sound amazing?

  • My go to is ketchup, mustard and fried onions but then I remember there is cheese, and hot sauce, and jalapenos, and mayo, and so many other worthy things, is 3 toppings enough?

  • Carmelised onion, pickled cucumbers, some spiciness like dijon mustard, ketchup for sure 👍 I have some homemade cwikla ( what suits to meat perfectly so I guess to hot dog it would too - it's mashed beetroots with horseradish woonderful)

  • Yeah I don't eat hot dogs and haven't for years. When I did it was Cincinnati style coneys, chili, cheese and mustard or traditional style chili, mustard and sauerkraut.
