What's your go-to cocktail and, more importantly, why?

Oh dear, he's ranting again, isn't he?

The first cocktail I ever tried was a Strawberry Caipiroska, which is basically a strawberry smoothie with vodka thrown into the mix. Then I moved on to G & T and then Tom Collins and then, lastly, Moscow Mule.

In the early 2000s, I decided I was the kind of person who drinks Gin & Tonic because of this scene.

Miami Vice is one of my favourite movies ever. Partly, because I actually liked the film and I think Michael Mann is great but also because of context. Who I was with when I watched this movie. And when. And where.

A few years later, I became aware of the existence of a cocktail called Tom Collins (gin, lemon juice, sugar, and carbonated water) because I once watched a film I liked titled 'The Longest Week', starring Jason Bateman in the role of Conrad Valmont, a rich man-child who spends his time philandering and drinking Tom Collins.

Then I went to Atlantic City, NJ once and I sort of assumed AC casinos would employ the same complimentary drinking policy as Vegas casinos and that's more or less true. I found automatic machines where you can get drinks at a discounted price and as the Tom Collins was the cheapest cocktail, well, that's what I'd go for.

It's about what we like, but also about the way we tend to associate drinks with different moments and times. Back in September I was able to attend the 2020 Florence Cocktail Week which, as you can imagine, is one of (very) few highlights of 2020 so whatever else went to sh*t last year, I did at least enjoy that. And I especially enjoyed something called the 'Cesarino' (pictured in the hero image), made with Martini Fiero, Bombay Dry Gin, Prosecco and ginger ale. So any cocktail that vaguely tastes or looks like a Cesarino will certainly bring back those memories in the future.

These days I'm mostly obsessed with Moscow Mule (again) but I recently tried the AMF and I quite liked it. Yes, you heard it here first, from now on I shall be pairing my pineapple pizza with an AMF.

  • I have 3, all classics. I love a good Cosmopolitan because it’s pretty simple to make. Most everyone has the ingredients on hand, & in the words of Carrie Bradshaw it’s fabulous even if she doesn’t agree with me lol.

I adore a bourbon or whiskey sour. Only 3 ingredients. Bourbon or whiskey, simple syrup & lemon (plus cherry for garnish). Although it’s a classic I’ve only just discovered it and it’s now my go-to drink & I absolutely love it.

And last but never least is the gin & tonic. Couldn’t be easier. I think I have been drinking these the longest so it has sentimental value. Just three ingredients, gin, tonic, & I prefer a lime wedge.

    Cheers.

  • Vodka and tonic, dirty. I started drinking that on a trip to Russia.

In the summer it's Jack Daniels and ginger ale, with a squeeze of lime. It's really refreshing on a hot day but will still get you comfortably drunk. 😁

  • Well, back in the days when I still drank, my go to was always a whiskey and a soda of some sort. Bourbon and Coke was a favourite for years (and where I really started) then I learned to love Canadian Whiskies and usually Sprite or real 7-Up. There is also a lot to be said for brandy or cognac in a Sprite or 7-Up. Needless to say, all are good without the sodas, too.

  • A classic Pink Gin is my favourite, Copper House Gin with Angostura bitters, ice and a thin slice of lemon peel. Chin-Chin. 🍸
