There’s a bar in London called The Drunken Butler where you can order Negroni made with gin, vermouth and bitters from the 50s, 70s and 80s.
Spirits such as gin, and beverages like bitter and vermouth can potentially be stored and consumed till the end of the time - the worst that can happen is they taste funny - so this is perfectly safe, but it would be weird to drink something made before you were born.
Yuma Hashemi, the chef and mixologist that came up with the idea, said the selection of spirits they picked “pays respect to the Negroni’s history”, giving Negroni drinkers and fans the opportunity to appreciate a drink that people have enjoyed through generations.
Hashemi has personally spent years hunting down the best possible bottles of gin, Vermouth and Campari and he said a trip to Helsinki gave him the inspiration for this project.
“When you speak to a winemaker, you see their eyes sparkling, talking about the old wines in their cellars,” sai Hashemi. “Opening a wine from 30 years ago or older is always a surprise. When you find a good bottle it is magical, the taste brings you back in time. A Negroni has three ingredients, if you like to travel back in time we’ve got three new vintages for you, 1980s, 1970s and 1950s.”
The Drunken Butler is located at 20 Rosebery Ave in Clerkenwell, London EC1R 4SX.
What do you say? Would you try a Negroni made with a 40-, 50- or even 70-year-old spirit (priced at £32, £45, £58)? I probably would. Let me know in the comments below.
