Look at you thinking about throwing a burger on the grill this evening and hoping for the best. Stop! Step back. Check yourself. What's missing? Not the sun, that's out again. Think, something else. Oh, your phone of course!

Say hello to a new era of barbecue geekdom. What we are about to tell you will blow your mind right there in the garden and have you cooking like a rogue tech wizard who has just discovered a digital barbecue: joyfully. The thing is, a tech wizard has discovered a digital barbecue. What's it all about? Well we are about to tell you.

First here's a picture of an insanely delicious juicy burger to get you warmed up. Yum.

Sure, you think you have the barbecue thing down. We get that. But allow us to introduce you to the Masterbuilt Gravity series and all its fancy gubbins. Choose from three models: the Gravity Series 560 Digital Charcoal Grill + Smoker; the Gravity Series 800 Digital Charcoal Grill + Smoker with griddle and the Gravity Series 1050 Digital Charcoal Grill + Smoker, all by Masterbuilt.

All three dream machines will smoke, grill, sear, bake and roast your meat and veg like never before. And the best thing? They might look super-advanced and futuristic, but they work as smoothly with grill newbies as they do with those of you who are comfortable flipping meat... sorry *ahem*, being authentic barbecue royalty.

Heck, we have all the reasons why you need one of these tech-charged barbecues in your life this summer. And we're sharing all with you, right here, right now. Grab your tongs and hit download.

Give it a grilling

People started cooking meat on fires around 1.8 million years ago. Things have advanced a little since then, and that brings us nicely on to the Gravity Series 560 Digital Charcoal Grill + Smoker by Masterbuilt. Get ready to become the best ever pitmaster (in your neighbourhood at least).

This bad boy comes with a digital control panel you can use to set the temperature of your barbecue, or you can use WiFi or Bluetooth on your smart device. The in-built DigitalFan will maintain the right cooking temp.  We told you it had gone digital mad, didn't we?

Want us to talk tech some more? How about a built-in temperature gauge and meat probe thermometer for perfect results every time. You're welcome. The grill reaches 110°C in 7 minutes or 370°C in 13 minutes. That's very hot, very quickly. Thank goodness for that cool summer breeze.

Other highlights include a GravityFed charcoal hopper that holds over 12 hours of charcoal (around 4.5kgs) and then gravity kicks (the coals drop down as you use them) in to ensure you have constant fuel on the fire. The reversible cast-iron grates are perfect for smoking or searing. You can also master the art of charcoal grilling and smoking with Masterbuilt. Hurray!

Gravity Series™ 1050 Digital Charcoal Grill + Smoker by Masterbuilt

Fun fact: the word barbecue comes from the language of a Caribbean Indian tribe called the Taino. Their word for grilling on a raised wooden grate is "barbacoa". Tuck that gem away in your brain's pub quiz folder. Anyway, where were we?

Smokin' meats

Let's get serious for a sec. We're introducing the Gravity Series 1050 Digital Charcoal Grill and Smoker by Masterbuilt. It also has a charcoal hopper. Look, the nice man in the t-shirt (above) is filling it up with charcoal coals so nicely. Note: a full eight hours of burn right there.

This machine has earned every inch of the 1050 label. How? Add up the surface area of the reversible smoke and sear cast-iron grates and FoldAway warming and smoking racks and you get a total of 1050 sq. inches of cooking space. Huge! That's a lot of smoked-to-perfection brisket to wrap your chops around.

You can set the right temp on the digital control panel or your smart device and as before the DigitalFan maintains the desired cooking temperature. In fact, all three from the Series do this, only this one reaches 110°C in 10 minutes or 370°C in 15 minutes. We guess it's bigger, but boy are the burgers worth the wait.

Get the griddle fired up!

Before you throw the doors open to your new garden smokehouse, a third Masterbuilt machine is worth considering: the Gravity Series 800 Digital Charcoal Grill and Smoker with Griddle. Yup, this one has a griddle ready to smoke, grill, sear (ooh tuna steaks?), bake and roast. It does it all.

This one has all the temperature setting Bluetooth goodness, plus the power of GravityFed charcoal grilling (the hopper also holds 4.5kgs), and you can use traditional grates (remember those?) or the full flat top griddle. And the DigitalFan is there to minimise heat fluctuations.

This reaches 110°C in 8 minutes, 230°C in 10 minutes, or 370°C in 14 minutes. Phew. It has two porcelain-coated warming slash smoking racks for 800 total square inches (hence the name!) of magical cooking space. There's also a fold away shelf and plenty of extra prep space.

The removable grease tray will catch excess fatty drippings, which makes this a healthy way of cooking. Unless you make gravy out of said drippings: we are in the UK now after all. Not Kansas, not any more. We love gravy, even in the garden, right? Anything goes here!

Now for a quick lesson in how the barbecue works...

Load the hopper (remember the man in the t-shirt) with briquettes or lump charcoal and let gravity do the work, fuelling your fire for continuous cooking.

We might be accused of stating the obvious here, but just in case: use paper or a fire starter to ignite your flames.

3. SET IT

Now for the smart bit. Set your desired temperature on the digital control panel or a smart device using Bluetooth or WiFi. You too could be eating sausages off a big fork with an angry face.

What was that about a Masterbuilt app?

Oh yes, we haven't forgotten the app promise. There's one for everything nowadays isn't there? Barbecues included. The new and improved Masterbuilt app will help you master the art of smoking, from prep to plate.

With custom timers and alerts, you can monitor your meaty masterpieces with a new level of authority whether you're a fake-it-until-you-make-it novice or a seasoned BBQ pro. Set the smoking temp and timings, keep track of the internal meat temp and stand proud next to your hero grill.

The app features over 250 delicious recipes from cookbook author and leader of Masterbuilt, John McLemore, which will get you started on the path to barbecue smoking mastery. It even has a shopping list feature, so you won’t forget your favourite wood chips or essential sauces at the supermarket. How cool is that?

With new improvements and Bluetooth connectivity updates in mind, you can create signature dishes that become family traditions forever more. Name that bespoke burger after your good self.

A final disclaimer

All three marvellous Masterbuilt creations may lead to serious barbecue hogging this summer. Don't fight it. Give up the tongs and relax. Let the new self-designated barbecue tech geek get hot on making you the burger of your life. Enjoy!

  • That's a cool idea for a novice, that way they can get a feel for regulating temp and timing things correctly. Being a millennial, I probably can't fail at the grill with a handy app 😅

  • Where’s the fun in that? I like regulate who gets the best cooked food based on what food and booze they bring, how helpful they are…..most of the time everyone will get the best, sometimes some people will deserve a cremated offering 🤣
